A truly fabulous example of Victorian craftsmanship, this elegant quarter-sawn oak Davenport writing desk dates to around 1870 and is brimming with character, charm, and practicality.
The desk features a beautifully curved lid that opens to reveal a thoughtfully designed interior, complete with letter racks, inkwell holder, pen tray, and discreet secret compartments—perfect for keeping treasured items safe and organised. The moulded fall-front, with its softly rounded corners, retains its original tooled leather writing surface, adding both authenticity and sophistication.
Inside, you’ll find a central drawer for added storage, alongside four mahogany-lined drawers to the right-hand side. The left side mirrors the look with cleverly designed faux drawers, maintaining the desk’s balanced and classic appearance. All drawers are fitted with their original escutcheons and working locks.
The piece stands proudly on beautifully turned bun feet, finished with charming brown porcelain castors, making it both sturdy and easy to position. The oak has developed a rich, warm colour overtime, showcasing a striking and highly desirable grain pattern. Recently cleaned and treated with a traditional wax finish, it presents in excellent condition, having clearly been well cared for throughout its life. Comes complete with original bill of sale at £975.
