SKU: S561 Category:

A wonderful and highly evocative work by renowned Lancashire artist Tom Dodson (1910–1991), beautifully capturing the warmth, humour, and nostalgia of northern life in years gone by. Signed lower right and bearing a Fine Art Guild stamp, this striking image is a superb example of Dodson’s instantly recognisable style.

The scene is alive with character and atmosphere, depicting the bustling excitement surrounding The Palladium and Circus. Rich in detail and painted with wonderfully vibrant colours, the artwork perfectly captures the charm and energy of working-class Lancashire during the 1920s and 30s.

Born in Salford, Tom Dodson was the eldest son in a hardworking Lancashire family. From an early age he showed remarkable artistic talent, often covering the pavements around his Ordsall home with chalk drawings of local characters. However, like many of his generation, necessity meant leaving school at just 14 to work in industry, spending much of his life employed in grocery, bacon curing, and later as a school caretaker.

Only after retirement did Tom fully return to painting, drawing upon vivid childhood memories of gas-lit streets, bustling fairgrounds, church parades, mills, classrooms, and everyday northern life. His paintings are celebrated for their honesty, simplicity, warmth, and humour — qualities that made him one of the North’s most loved artists.

Unlike many contemporaries, Dodson never forced a style; his paintings flowed naturally from memory and observation. His nostalgic Lancashire scenes quickly gained huge popularity, with his first exhibition reportedly selling out within hours.

This lovely painting is presented in excellent condition and is an eye-catching piece with wonderful colour and presence.
