Arthur Delaney – Great George Square, Liverpool

A wonderful painting by renowned British artist Arthur Delaney (1927–1987), best known for his nostalgic depictions of northern working-class life. Deeply influenced by his close friend L. S. Lowry, Delaney’s paintings capture the warmth, character, and atmosphere of Britain’s industrial towns and cities during the early to mid-20th century.

This charming scene of Liverpool’s famous Great George Square is full of life and movement, featuring a bustling tram scene, iconic architecture, and figures wrapped against the northern weather, with the world famous Liver Buildings in the background, and looked down on by Lord Nelsons monument that was finished in 1813, all painted in Delaney’s unmistakable style. Smoke-filled skies, muted tones, and carefully observed detail combine to create a timeless image of Liverpool’s rich maritime heritage and everyday city life.

For much of his working life, Arthur Delaney was employed in the design studios of Manchester’s textile factories before turning to painting professionally in 1972. His work remains highly collectible for its affectionate portrayal of a disappearing industrial Britain.

The painting is pencil signed and beautifully presented, mounted and framed under glass, making it an excellent addition to any collection of Northern art or British industrial scenes.
