Pierre-Jules Mêne (25 March 1810 – 20 May 1879) was one of France’s foremost sculptors and a pioneer of the celebrated 19th-century Animalier School, a movement dedicated to the highly realistic portrayal of animals. Widely regarded as one of the most successful and commercially prolific animal sculptors of his era, Mêne became renowned for his remarkable naturalism, anatomical precision and ability to capture animals in dynamic, fleeting moments.

Today, Mêne's authentic bronzes are highly prized by collectors and examples of his work can be found in world-class institutions including The Louvre Museum in Paris, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Musée d'Orsay.

This beautiful sculpture is mounted on a substantial black marble base, which perfectly complements the rich bronze finish and gives the piece a real sense of presence.
