Victorian Fire Screen with Superb Berlin Wool Needlepoint, c.1850

A magnificent early Victorian fire screen dating to circa 1850, featuring a superb original Berlin wool needlepoint tapestry panel depicting exotic flowers, beautifully housed within a carved walnut surround.

The screen is raised on an impressive Cuban mahogany stand, with wonderful colour, grain and patination. The tripod base features elegant cabriole legs with finely hand-carved scrolls, acanthus leaf knees and scrolled toes, together with an inverted finial beneath.

Above, an expertly turned central post rises to a handsome capping finial, supporting the carved walnut frame which encloses the exceptionally decorative needlepoint panel.

A fine and highly decorative example of its type, retaining its excellent original features and displaying the quality of craftsmanship associated with the Victorian period.

The piece is solid, stable and ready for the home, having been waxed and polished.

A particularly charming piece of Victorian life, combining superb needlework with beautifully carved walnut and Cuban mahogany. The exotic floral tapestry makes this an especially decorative addition to a traditional or eclectic interior.
